CLASS TITLE: SCHOOL COUNSELOR
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establish rapport and positive relationships with students and parents:
- Convey interest, respect, and regard.
- Be sensitive to nonverbal messages.
- Demonstrate skill in appropriate counseling techniques.
- Convey acceptance of feelings and values.
Initiate student growth:
- Help students set goals and examine alternatives.
- Assist students in developing problem solving techniques.
- Facilitate student self-appraisal.
Model positive interpersonal skills with students, parents, and colleagues:
- Show understanding and acceptance.
- Demonstrate listening skills.
- Assist in the identification of alternatives.
- Be open and honest.
Serve as an advocate of students:
- Provide relevant information regarding students' strengths and needs.
- Make constructive recommendations based on knowledge of student needs.
- Protect student interests and needs in discussing intervention strategies.
Conduct conferences and staffings in a positive, effective manner:
- Facilitate and direct discussion.
- Prepare appropriate materials and have available.
- Provide and elicit relevant information.
Provide networking assistance to students, parents, and colleagues:
- Make referrals to outside agencies and resources.
- Use in-school referral sources; e.g. psychologist, another counselor, physical therapist.
Professional Responsibilities:
- Follow ethical and professional practices with students, records, parents, and colleagues.
- Comply with District policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records and file reports on a timely basis.
- Work harmoniously and effectively with school personnel to improve instruction.
- Work effectively with parents.
- Uses effective methods of communication with professional personnel.
- Be dependable and punctual in fulfillment of responsibilities.
EVALUATION: Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of staff members.
