Position: Head Athletic Coach

 

 

CLASSIFICATION:  Non-Exempt

 

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The head coach is responsible to organize and supervise a total sports program while providing extracurricular athletes the knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of the sport; the principles of fair play, a sense of self-worth and competence, and activities that will foster physical skills and safe play.  He/she must deliver coaching sessions that are participant centered, structured, progressive, fun and of high quality to all participants.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of Assistant Coaches, student athletes, managers, statisticians within the specific athletic season of sport along with the levels of competition at the A, B or C levels.
  • Responsible for the coaching staff’s implementation of the athletic policy as approved by the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District and as stated in the coach’s handbook.
  • The head coach is responsible to have a thorough knowledge of the District’s and the Athletic Conferences regulations on athletics and the sport that is being coached.
  • Assists the Athletic Director and or Athletic Coordinators as needed with scheduling of events including athletic contests, fundraisers and practice planning/scheduling.
  • Coaching and staff responsibilities assure that the staff strives to improve their skills by attending coaching conferences, clinics, staff meetings, professional growth activities etc. 
  • The head coach is to delegate specific duties to assistant coaches and staff members and will make recommendations to the athletic director regarding possible candidates for assistant coaches.    
  • The head coach is responsible for the establishment of the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by assistant coaches and staff; ensuring the continuity within the athletic season for that sport.  To undertake the necessary planning for each activity to ensure that the program demonstrates progression within the program, linked to the principles of long term athletic development.  To continually monitor and evaluate all practice sessions and games to ensure program progression.
  • The head coach will provide explanation and demonstration to athletes regarding the purpose, playing philosophies, rules of the game along with the methods of regulating movement of body, hands, or feet to achieve proficiency in the activity.
  • Explanation and demonstration of the appropriate/safe use of equipment and or apparatus’s utilized in the sport.
  • Explain and demonstrate to athletes the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.
  • The head coach must observe athletes during practice/games to detect and correct individual fundamental and team mistakes and for the coaching of each individual athlete so that he/she can perform to the best of his/her ability.
  • The head coach must explain and enforce eligibility, training, safety, and team rules.
  • The head coach is responsible for the supervision of athletes in all areas: playing area, locker room on the bus and at home/away games.
  • The head coach is responsible for disciplining student/athletes in a firm and consistent manner.
  • The head coach is responsible for communicating practice times to the athletic director, to athletes, to central office personnel, and to the families of the athletes. 
  • The head coach is responsible for communicating in coordination with the athletic director game leave/arrival times to the central office personnel and to transportation.
  • The head coach must exhibit good sportsmanship at all times and expect athletes to do likewise.  Instilling in each player a pride and respect for high academic and conduct standards along with respect for equipment and school property. 
  • The head coach must complete athletic injury forms and file them with the schools health department .
  • Provide support to the athletic administrator/athletic coordinator regarding athletic eligibility, athletic packet signatures, physical examination, proof of insurance coverage and parental consent documentation.
  • The head coach will check out and maintain an inventory of equipment, uniforms and athletic supplies
  • The head coach will provide a game by game travel list of participants traveling to any away contest.
  • The head coach will maintain credentials to drive school vehicles (excluding full sized busses) for the team. 
  • The head coach will according to established procedures; request through the athletic director any requisitions for: 1) equipment, 2) supplies, 3) fundraising activities or 4) plans for additional camps or activities related to the sport.
  • The head coach will perform other related tasks as assigned by the Athletic Director of the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District.         

JOB REQUIREMENT:

Middle school coaches are required to a fingerprint submission for criminal history check, along with agreeing to reference checks.

They are required to sign provided signature documents at one of the three coaching training sessions provided by the athletic administrator. 

 

EVALUATION:

Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Staff Personnel.
